Directed by Walter Lang, the film is a post-World War II story that explores the challenges faced by returning veterans and their loved ones as they attempt to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the war.

Maureen O'Hara plays Julie Beck, a widow who lost her husband during the war. She is left to raise their young son, Timmy (Larry Olsen), on her own. The film follows Julie's struggle to come to terms with her husband's death and her efforts to provide a stable and loving home for Timmy.

The narrative also focuses on the experiences of three war veterans who return to their hometown and try to reintegrate into civilian life.
