Description
Nomad ger camp in the Steppe in the valley of the Orkhon river, Arkhangai Aimag, Mongolia. The ger, or yurt, is the traditional felt tent of the Mongol nomads. At right, on the horizon (looking like a chain of hills in the distance) the ruins of the ancient citadel of Khar Balgas in Khotont sum. Khar Balgas (or Kara Balgasun in Turkic), founded in 751, was the capital of the Uighur khanate which ruled Mongolia from 745-840. Its remains were long mistaken for the ruins of Karakorum, the ancient Mongol capital.
